Edouard

Edouard Amyotte

Edouard, son of Oscar and Diana Amyotte, was born on August 22, 1929.  He was the eighth child of a family of thirteen.  He went to school in Mallaig.  He enjoyed most sports, especially baseball and hockey.  Edouard met Germaine Belanger, daughter of Alfred and Marie Anne Belanger, and they married in November 1951.

They were blessed with nine children – Real, Marie Anne, Bernard, Robert, Roland, Joanne, Jerome, Collette, and Alfred.

They farmed in Mallaig and Therien, then returned to Mallaig in 1969.  At this time they took over the post office and telephone exchange.  Edouard was a Cooperators insurance agent, a carpenter and a member of the Volunteer Fire Department. They have always been active in their community.  Edouard was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and Germaine was a member of “Les Femmes Chretiennes”. In 1999, Edouard retired from the Post Office.  In his retirement, he spent many hours working for the Mallaig and District museum. He restored and repaired many items and buildings at the museum, including the “Speeder”. Edouard, along with his brothers Adelard and Lucien, built the replica of the Grassy Island School. They were recognized by the Alberta Governor General for their many hours of service.  Edouard also spent many hours renovating and repairing things in his children’s homes.

Edouard and Germaine lived 35 years in their dream home in Mallaig. Many reunions and wonderful memories were made in this home. In October 2013, they decided to move to Sunnyside Manor in St. Paul, Alberta. They were both very active members at the Seniors Centre; floor curling in the winter and taking care of flowers around the buildings during the spring and summer.  Edouard enjoyed his daily crib games with the other residents.  They spent time visiting and enjoying their family and friends.

Sadly, shortly after Edouard and Germaine celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary, Edouard passed away in November 2020 with his family at his side.

Germaine continued to live an active life at Sunnyside Manor until September 2024 when she passed away peacefully and was reunited with Edouard in heaven.

Edouard and Germaine are survived by 9 children, 25 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
