Lucien

About Lucien

Lucien was the fourth child of Oscar Amyotte and Diana Dionne, born on January 22, 1923. He took all his education, grade one to ten, in Grassy Island School. He walked three miles to the rural school before the new one was built in Mallaig. During the summer he would walk to school as the horse were needed to work on the farm. In winter he had a horse and cutter.

After grade ten, which was the highest grade taught at the time, he stayed to help on the farm. He learned to knit socks which helped to pass the winter months. At eighteen, he went on his first thrashing run. He would work twelve hours a day and make $2.75 a day. In 1943 his father took a special lumber permit. Lucien spent four winters in the bush making lumber which he sold to buy a farm which later became his home.

On July 15, 1947, Lucien married Juliette Gascon, second daughter of Donat Gascon and Carmel Ouelette. Juliette attended school in old Therien School until grade eight. They moved to their farm in the spring after spending the winter of 1947-48 at camp. In July their first child was born. They started farm life with three cows, one sow and a team of horses. As the family grew they bought two more quarters of land. They worked through sickness, drought, wet falls and early snows. In 1974, along with his sons, he bought a business in town. In 1980, he sold his farm to his son. Lucien drove a school bus for eleven years, took care of the town water for eight years and enjoyed driving the old street sweeper.

Church and community were a big part of their lives. Lucien worked on the church construction, served on the parish council, president of Farmer’s Union, secretary of the Recreation Board, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and volunteer fireman. Baseball was a big part of his life and he coached and played for many years. Many Sundays were spent taking the family to parish picnics. In later years, they enjoyed many activities through the Seniors Group.

After many years of a full and busy life, Juliette’s health was failing and Lucien devoted his time to care for her. She passed away April 22, 2000. Four years later, Lucien passed away on April 24, 2004.
