Paul Moise Joseph Amyotte
Paul Moise Joseph Amyotte was born in Mallaig, Alberta Canada on July 15, 1917, son of Oscar Amyotte and Dianna Dionne. He was the first born of a family of 14 (12 boys and 2 girls). Growing up on a farm, Paul learned at a young age to work hard and to be reliable. He attended Grassy Island School until he completed his grade 9. Mrs. McCormick, being English speaking only, could not teach the French class, so Paul taught Grade 1 and 2 French.
On October 28, 1940 Paul married a lovely young lady by the name of Lorette Martin, also from Mallaig, Alberta. They were the first couple to be married by Father Chalifoux in St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Church at the mission of Mallaig, Alberta.
They settled 1/2 mile east of Mallaig on a quarter of land NW19-60-9-4 which was just south from his father's farm. They had a mixed farming operation. Times were hard. During winter Paul would go north to lumber camps with his father Oscar. Lorette was left to do chores and take care of the family. Paul was very involved in his community. He was a school trustee, board member of the Caisse Populaire, parrish council member (marguiller), Chamber of commerce and the Knights of Columbus.
After 25 years of farming Paul's health did not permit the family to stay on. A serious decision was made to move to the city of Edmonton Alberta. With his farming background, Paul was not afraid to attempt any type of work. His first employment was with Gendall Supplies where he had the mishap of getting part of fingers cut in a saw. After this mishap he found employment with Canada Post until his retirement, 17 years later. He also held an evening job as supervisor at Kingsway Hotel in order to cover expenses for his nine children still living at home.
In Edmonton, Alberta he continued to be very active in the Knights of Columbus. In 1987 Knights of Columbus Council LaVerendrye #1938 honored him by hosting their 2nd Degree exemplification in his honor. He was thanked at a special banquet for his 40 years of dedicated service and active participation in the order.
Lorette Martin was born in St. Vincent, Alberta Canada on October 26, 1917. She was the daughter of Ovila Martin and Flore Malo, the third child of a family of four, (2 boys and 2 girls). Lorette, at the age of 14 months was left with her father and siblings as their mother Flore passed away January 1, 1919. At the age of 3, her Aunt Georgianna and Uncle Thuribe Gagnon welcomed her into their home. Lorette went to school in St. Edouard (Ecole Poirier) for her first year. She finished her schooling at a boarding school in St.Paul Alberta under the care of Les Soeurs de l'Assomption. At the age of 15, she left for Mallaig to live with her father as he needed her help. After her marriage to Paul, along with the task of raising her family, Lorette had time to do some voluntering as well. She joined Les Dames de Ste. Anne. This was a social outing as well as volunteer help.
Generosity and golden hearts, Paul and Lorette, opened their home to many family members and friend. There was always room for one more. As newlyweds they accomodated the Sisters of Assomption until they found a place to stay. Lorette's father Ovila lived with them for years, then a friend Joseph Boisse and Lucien Parenteau. After their move to Edmonton, Alberta, Thuribe and Georgianna Gagnon, Lorette's uncle and aunt lived with them until their passing. Amongst all this, Lorette found time for babysitting and custom sewing which she loved very much. Growing house plants and gardening was her favortie past time. Paul and Lorette have enjoyed the fruits of their labor.
After almost 60 years of marriage Paul passed away June 9, 2000 and Lorette May 8 2003. In God's loving arms they are in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Edmonton, Alberta Canada
