Germaine
About Germain
Germaine Clara Amyotte, first daughter of Oscar and Diana Amyotte, was born on September 3, 1918. She finished her grade eight at Grassy Island School. After that she stayed home to help her mother look after her many siblings. In her limited spare time she loved to read.
During this time she met a handsome soldier (Phillippe Doucet) and soon married on December 28, 1942.
Dad (Phillippe) then built them a house in Therrien, on his parent’s ( Olivier and Eva Doucet) property. Not long after the birth of their second child their new house burned down. After staying with mom’s parent’s (Oscar and Diana Amyotte) for a short period of time, they then build a new house on property that Phillippe had recently purchased , just a few miles south of Mallaig.
Unfortunately about ten years later, when the family had increased by five , their home burned again. As a result the extended family and friends help with accommodating the children , until they found a place to reside in Mallaig.
The two youngest of the family were born after our parents rebuilt and moved back to the farm. The count was now nine. Rene, Louis, Diana, Jeanne,Omer, Claire, Gerard, Maurice and Roland.
Farming was not enough to feed a family of nine kids, dad seeked employment elsewhere, that left Mom and the older boys to look after the farm. Eight years later the family moved to St.Paul. Their stay in St.Paul was short , for dad’s work took him to Edmonton for better pay. The family soon following in 1966.
In 1973 Mom travelled to Montreal with Pepere and Memere Amyotte, to visit Claire’s family and her sister Edna. In the years that followed their move to Edmonton, Mom worked at several jobs to supplement the family income. She managed a cafeteria for CNIB , worked for Lily Dale Poultry and the job she enjoyed most was working at Honeyboy Bakery. Being the compassionate woman she was , she always had room to take in someone in need and boarders . In her retirement she enjoyed knitting and playing bingo.
They remained in Edmonton until they were deceased. Germaine deceased on July 1, 1993 and Phillippe deceased January 10, 2001.
Still miss you both.
